Dispatches on social change + personal transformation

Hi friends!

🌱 Latest from Jeremy

I'm starting a podcast on personal + systemic transformation! (Coming January 2024!)

I'm SO excited to share this update with y'all! I'm starting a podcast!! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

It's for coaches and leaders about the intersection of coaching and social justice.

It's the podcast I wish I had when I started getting curious about coaching and personal transformation work over a decade ago.

When I went to social justice spaces, I didn't see much conversation about the inner work of change.

When I went to coaching and personal transformation spaces, everything was discussed as an "individual issue," and I heard very little discussion about how systems of oppression were impacting our personal lives.

I've spent the last decade finding the teachers, schools, books, and thought leaders who are bringing these two worlds together. And I'm bringing them together on this podcast to share their wisdom and gather their resources!

This podcast will be a space to explore:

  1. Brining coaching to movements: How can coaching skills and practices support changemakers and social movements working for systemic change?
  2. Bringing collective liberation into our coaching methods: What does it look like to place our commitment to the well-being of the whole at the center of a coaching conversation/relationship? How can social, political, and ecological realities inform the foundation of HOW we coach? (Rather than being de-politicized and individualistic.)

βœ… What topics should explore on the podcast?

After recording the first three episodes of the podcast, I realized that I really want input from you all about the topics I should explore:

  • If you're a coach, what questions do you have about how to use your coaching to serve social justice leaders?
  • If you're a leader, what topics do you want to explore about bringing personal transformation into your work for change?

I'd love your help! The survey below only has 3 questions. Thanks!

β˜€οΈ Quotes & Inspiration

I learned about this insightful paper about "post-oppositionality" friend a coaching colleague. It's fairly academic, but the underlying message speaks deeply to the new ways of being that I see emerging.

Typically, oppositionality functions in a winner-takes-all manner, creating either/or frameworks that limit our options to two extremes: Either I’m right and I win; or you’re right and you win. This dichotomous structure prevents us from forging the complex, nuanced commonalities and relational differences that facilitate the creative development of a range of possibilities, such as these:

I’m partially right, and so are you; and we’re both partially wrong. We’re all right, although we need to figure out how to align our perspectives. None of us are right; let’s start over!

Instead, we have two options: Either our views are entirely the same, or they’re completely different.

I love the space this creates for nuance and complexity and compassion and generosity. I long to see more of this in progressive movement spaces! (And I see it happening more and more every day!)

πŸ“• Interesting & fun shares

All of my shares this time are podcasts β€” I've been listening to a lot more! Here are a few of my favorites! Hope you can enjoy them over the holiday season.

And some fun shares:

πŸͺ΄ Invitations & programs (mine and others)

  • Radical Genealogy (from White Awake) - Starts Jan 7 - I've mentioned White Awake in my previous newsletters. This course is for folks with European roots (white or multiracial) who want to connect "their individual family histories to the broader histories of racism, colonialism, capitalism, traditional culture, and political resistance that shaped our ancestor's lives."

Big hugs,
Jeremy

Hi friends! 🌱 Latest from Jeremy Quote Collection: Deciding & Committing Since high school, I've had a secret obsession with collecting quotes. After spending most of this year deliberating about what's next for me career-wise, I got to a moment this past weekend where I thought "Oh! It's time to end the deliberation and commit to something... even if it's not everything I want it to be." This article is a collection of quotes I gathered in a fit of inspiration!
